1. Research

We first started with doing some online research about volunteering. Through our research, we found that people from 35-44 were less likely to volunteer. We made an assumption that this was because people of this age-range usually have children.

2. ideate

After defining our target market of people aged 35-44 with children, we came up with various ideas both as a group and individually. While we were in the ideation stage, we also spoke with our hackathon mentors to gain feedback and different perspectives of the ideas we had come up with thus far. We voted on the best individual ideas and as a group we decided that we should go with a subscription box with incentives for families to volunteer.

3. User research

In order for us to make sure our subscription box would be useful, we conducted three user tests.

The findings from our user tests of user aged 35-44 were:

- Time was the biggest issue when deciding whether or not to sign up

- Volunteers were more likely to volunteer if there was an incentive

- Families often didn’t know where to start. So, organizations should take the first step in recruiting volunteers

4. Designing

5. As a group, we began designing a prototype of the box in Figma. We consulted with one of the hack-a-thon mentors. With their feedback, we made a few changes to our high-fidelity prototype.

5. the pitch

We didn’t have a lot of time to practice… originally all 5 of us were supposed to present, but we decided it would be easiest for three members of our group to present… especially because we only had 5 minutes.

6. coming in first place!

Our idea captured the hearts of our judges and we ended up winning first place!
